Filling Agents

To improve product properties and reduce costs, filling agents can be added to a formulation. Mineral fillers are most commonly used for this purpose. These can affect various mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elasticity, impact resistance, thermal deformation, colour, and opacity.

Filling Agents

A good example of a filling agent that affects a mechanical property is the addition of talc to polypropylene (PP). The impact resistance and tensile strength will decrease, while the hardness and stiffness increase.

Cost-saving solutions

Standard filling agents

  • Calcium carbonate (CaCo3), usually used in PP and PE, can significantly reduce costs, plus it also has an ‘additive’ property, namely antiblock.
  • Calcium carbonate + colour (combo-batch). This development of calcium carbonate can be effectively utilized in combination with colours.
Improvement of technical properties

Special filling agents

  • Talc, usually used in PP, is cost-effective and improves mechanical properties such as stiffness.
  • Moisture absorber/Desiccant, a filler typically used in recycling where moisture can be a problem.
  • China Clay (kaolin) provides high mechanical strength in HDPE. It also has a high IR absorption capacity, used specifically with the film in greenhouses.
Environmental (bio) solutions

CARBOMAX®BIO is new in our range of biodegradable highly filled products with calcium carbonate (CaCo3). These products are intended for use in bio plastics, mainly for film applications (agricultural film, flexible packaging, bio waste bags, etc.). But also for thermoforming and injection molding.

Masterbatches

Our perception of the world around us is predominantly inspired by colour. Today, we are using more and more plastic materials in an increasing number of products and in as many different colours. In addition to our broad range of products, we develop masterbatches to meet the precise requirements of our clients application.

Industries

Acting on fast changes in customer needs, manufacturers want to be able to anticipate when it comes to the raw materials they purchase and use for design, colour and additional properties in this dynamic industry.
